A Field of Susans, Deep Red and Near-Black, Original Art Canvas Print

The Work

This landscape-format canvas holds a full field of black-eyed Susans, red petals built in sharp, directional impasto strokes that stretch horizontally across the frame like wind moving through the composition. Each bloom carries the same near-black, domed centre found throughout this range, but here the red runs deeper, closer to oxblood than vermilion, with almost no other colour breaking through. A narrow band of teal and dark green surfaces at the base of the canvas, the only cool note in an otherwise unbroken red field. The petals in the foreground are largest and most defined, while those further back blur into looser, less resolved strokes, giving the piece real depth despite its flatness of palette.

The Inspiration

Most pieces in this range isolate a small cluster of blooms. This one asked what happens when the black-eyed Susan is allowed to spread out into something closer to a landscape than a portrait, a whole field rather than a single gathering. The horizontal format and the loosening of detail toward the back of the composition came directly from that idea, treating distance the way an actual field would render it. The narrow strip of teal at the base was left in deliberately, a single point of relief in a field that otherwise commits fully to red.

What It Carries

The sheer scale of repetition across this piece creates a feeling closer to standing inside a landscape than looking at a bouquet, something environmental rather than contained. The near-black centres, repeated dozens of times across the canvas, hold a quiet watchfulness that a single bloom wouldn't carry on its own. The narrow band of teal at the base gives the eye one place to rest before the red pulls it back in.

Living With It

Given its horizontal format and field-like density, this piece suits a wide wall, above a sofa, a headboard, or a long stretch in a dining room, more naturally than a narrower space. The deep red holds its saturation under most lighting, intensifying further under warm evening light. Against both dark and neutral walls, it reads as a genuine landscape rather than a floral accent, which gives it more range than a tighter, more traditional bouquet composition.
