About This Design

Black tree silhouettes stand against a patchwork of colour, their flat tops and bare, thorny branches cut sharply into blocks of teal, rust and cream. Some trees are solid black, others only outlined, so the repeat flickers between presence and absence. Behind them the colour sits in rough, overlapping rectangles, with fine grid lines and scratches running through the cream like the marks on an old map. Trees overlap in different sizes, large beside small, so the pattern never settles into a single viewpoint. At a distance the black reads as graphic punctuation across warm and cool fields. Up close, the small marks and edges come forward. Within Ancient Giants, Blackthorn is the most graphic and the most modern of the group, a tree reduced to its outline.

The Inspiration

Blackthorn starts from the shape a tree makes when everything else is stripped away: the skeleton of branches against a winter sky, a flat crown in perfect silhouette. Thorn trees are made for this, their bare outlines as recognisable as handwriting. The colour behind them is layered like a landscape at the end of a long dry season, rust earth, cool teal shade, pale dust. What remains in black is the part of the tree that lasts.

What It Carries
