The Work

Orange, cobalt, hot pink, and electric cerulean collide across the canvas in thick, glossy impasto with no hierarchy and no restraint. Large pooling islands of vivid orange sit heavy against deep navy, their edges irregular and alive where the paint was pulled and flung rather than placed. Yellow gathers in dense, luminous pockets across the mid-section, bright enough to read as light rather than pigment. Hot pink cuts diagonally through the composition in sharp, decisive strokes, connecting the warmer left side to the cooler cerulean upper right. Paint has been splattered freely across the surface, small orange droplets and fine lines of colour crossing the larger forms and giving the composition a sense of spontaneous energy that the broader strokes alone could not carry. The upper portion of the canvas opens into cleaner cerulean and sky blue, a brief moment of space before the colour closes in again below.

The Inspiration

Carnival Reef came from the idea that the tropical reef is not subtle. It does not ease you in or build gradually toward its most vivid moments. It arrives all at once, orange clownfish against purple sea fans, yellow tangs against midnight blue water, hot pink coral against cerulean. The decision to work with pure impasto at maximum saturation was not about exaggeration. It was about honesty. This is what the reef actually does to colour. This is what it feels like to be inside it.
