The Work

Vertical Rain moves in columns. Bands of teal, cyan, and cobalt run the full height of the composition, interrupted by orange and vermilion surging upward from below and red bleeding in from the right edge. White breaks through at the centre like a fissure, and yellow punctuates the teal field in long downward strokes that genuinely read as rain. The paint application is dense and layered, impasto ridges visible across the entire surface. Nothing here is transparent. Everything is built.

The Inspiration

The work came from watching colour behave like weather: the way blue dominates a sky and orange punches through it, the way light falls in columns rather than sheets. The vertical format of the strokes was the starting point, and the palette evolved from there. What began as a study in cool tones became something more confrontational as the warm colours forced their way in.

What It Carries

Vertical Rain holds the particular energy of disruption that is not yet damage. The blues are structural, the oranges are interruptions, and the white crack through the middle keeps the composition from resolving. It sits in a room as both a landscape and an emotional state, which is the best kind of ambiguity a painting can offer.

Living With It

The teal, cobalt, and orange palette makes this extremely versatile. It pairs naturally with warm timber, white walls, and earth-toned furnishings, as well as coastal-palette rooms where the blue family is already present.
