The Work
This portrait canvas holds red and teal in equal contrast, neither colour backing down across the full height of the piece. A grid pattern is pressed into the surface throughout, the same woven mesh texture that runs through the rest of the Iron Mesh Collection. Orange pools low at the base, gathering weight where the composition meets the bottom edge, while dark navy holds the outer edges in place like a frame within the frame. Rendered in a heavy impasto technique, the piece reads almost aerial, a city block seen from directly above, colour and structure locked into the same grid.

The Inspiration
Ground Level asks what a city looks like when you're standing in the middle of it rather than looking at a skyline from a distance. The composition behaves like a map, red and teal contesting territory the way traffic and rooftops compete for space in an aerial photograph. The grid running through the surface ties it back to the rest of the collection, structure that never lets the colour fully escape. It sits closer to structured abstraction than pure colour field, more interested in territory than gradient.

What It Carries
What lingers is the sense of contest. Red and teal never resolve into one dominant colour, they hold the tension for the entire piece, which is what makes it interesting to live with over time. The orange pooling at the base gives the eye somewhere to settle after taking in the fight happening above it. Seen from a distance, it reads as an aerial view. Up close, the grid and the brushwork take over, and the aerial read gives way to pure texture and colour.

Living With It
In portrait orientation, Ground Level works well in an entrance, a stairwell, or any tall, narrower wall that needs a piece with real presence. The red and teal palette leans toward charcoal, warm timber, and black detailing, while the orange base note pairs well with terracotta- or rust-toned furnishings. It holds its own in both residential and commercial settings, reading equally well as a solo statement piece or as the third instalment alongside The Crossing and Night Filter.
