About This Design

Mustard canopies stretch into wide, flat-topped tiers, each built from thick impasto strokes that catch light along their upper edges. Dark teal trunks twist up beneath them and split into a lattice of fine branches, so the crowns look held rather than simply placed. Behind the trees, pale grey mist and faint mountain contours soften the ground into something almost weightless. Trees of different heights share the repeat, tall ones rising through the tiers of smaller ones, which creates a layered, forest-like depth. At a distance the mustard reads as bands of sunlit leaf over a cool, shadowed base. Up close, the strokes lift into ridges you can follow one by one. The Inspiration

Heartwood is named for the dense, dark centre of a tree, the part that keeps holding its weight long after the outer layers have changed with every season. This design looks at that idea from the outside: sun-drenched leaves above, solid trunk below. Mustard was chosen for the colour of leaf in full light, deep teal for bark in shade. Between them sits a pairing as simple as the tree itself, what grows and what holds it up.
