The Work

Deep ochre and burnt orange marigolds fill most of this canvas, one dark burgundy bloom breaking the warmth in the upper right. The petals carry a hyper-real, almost lacquered saturation, each one lit as if from inside. A deep navy ground surfaces only at the edges, mostly consumed by the density of the bloom.

The Inspiration

This piece chased total warmth with a single interruption, the burgundy bloom acting as the one cool note in an otherwise unbroken ochre field. The lacquered intensity of the petals came from wanting the colour to feel almost too bright to look at directly.

What It Carries

The density and heat of this piece create an immersive rather than contemplative feeling, colour you stand inside rather than look at from a distance. The single burgundy bloom gives the eye one place to land before the ochre pulls it back.
