The Work

The face is assembled from interlocking impasto-style planes of cream, warm sand, and soft ochre, each segment catching light at a slightly different angle, giving the skin a mosaic quality that feels both ancient and immediate. Her gaze sits low and inward, not distant but weighted, the eyes carrying something unresolved. Deep raw umber and near-black dominate the hair and lower body, grounding the composition in shadow. The background is where the piece earns its title: broad horizontal bands of rust, burnt sienna, aged gold, and teal cut across the upper register like strata in exposed earth, streaked with drips and surface marks that read like weather damage on old render. Diagonal red and slate-grey slabs interrupt the warmth on the right, adding structural tension to what might otherwise sit too comfortably. The chest and shoulder area catches fragments of lavender and teal among the cream, small moments of cool colour that prevent the palette from feeling sealed.

The Inspiration

Rust is not decay. It is iron returning to its original state, the material doing what it was always going to do given enough time and exposure. This piece was built around that idea: that age reveals rather than destroys, that what remains after weathering is not less than what existed before, but more specific. The horizontal strata in the background read like geological cross-sections, layers of time made visible. She sits in front of all of it, neither preserved nor ruined, simply present.

What It Carries

The downward angle of her gaze is what holds you. She is not looking at the viewer and she is not looking away. She is looking at something interior, something the composition does not explain and does not need to. That privacy inside a very public face is the emotional core of the piece. The rust and rain of the title are in the background, but they are also in her expression: something weathered, something that has absorbed a great deal and chosen stillness as its response.

Living With It

The palette of raw umber, burnt sienna, aged gold, rust, and cool teal accents connects naturally with warm industrial interiors, exposed brick, aged timber, leather, and aged brass fittings. It sits beautifully against terracotta walls and deep ochre or tobacco-toned spaces.
