Poppies in Reverse, Cobalt on Ochre, Original Art Canvas Print

The Work

Deep cobalt blue poppies stand against a solid, unbroken ochre-orange field, the composition split cleanly between dense bloom on the left and flat colour on the right. The petals carry a rich, almost lacquered blue, a colour reversal from the warm florals found elsewhere in this range. Fine black stems anchor the blooms at the base.

The Inspiration

This piece asked what happens when the expected temperature relationship flips, a cool flower against a warm field instead of the other way around. The flat, unbroken ochre ground was left deliberately simple, giving the cobalt blooms nothing to compete with.

What It Carries

The colour reversal here creates genuine surprise, something unexpected within a familiar floral format. The generous negative space on the right lets the piece breathe in a way the denser pieces in this range don't.

Living With It

The strong colour-block quality of this piece makes it a natural fit for a modern or minimal space, and its negative space gives it flexibility that denser pieces lack. Reads well in both large and more contained rooms.
