Roses Against the Teal, Burnt Orange and Deep Red, Original Art Canvas Print

The Work

Ten roses stand upright against a worked teal ground, their petals rendered in thick, sculpted impasto that folds and curls across each bloom in burnt orange, brick red, and near-black shadow. The strokes are directional, following the natural spiral of each rose so the texture reads as structure rather than decoration. Long, dark stems anchor the blooms at the base of the canvas, giving the composition real verticality. The teal background is loose and gestural where the flowers are tightly built, creating a clear contrast between the controlled bloom and the looser field around it. Light catches hardest along the raised edges of the petals closest to the front.

The Inspiration

The rose is the most painted flower there is, which made restraint the real challenge here. Rather than softening the palette to feel fresh, this piece went the other way, pushing the reds and oranges as deep and physical as the impasto would allow, and letting the teal do the work of making that heat legible. The upright, formal arrangement of the stems was a deliberate choice, closer to how roses are actually cut and displayed than how they're usually painted loose and scattered.

What It Carries

The vertical structure of the stems gives this piece a formality that softer floral work doesn't have, a sense of composure holding underneath the intensity of the colour. That combination, controlled form and heated palette, is what keeps the eye returning to it. The teal ground never fully settles, which keeps the piece from feeling static despite its upright, orderly arrangement.

Living With It

The teal and burnt orange combination gives this piece real range, equally strong against dark walls where the colours saturate, or against white where the contrast sharpens. The vertical format suits a narrower wall or a space beside a doorway where height matters more than width. Morning light picks out the raised impasto ridges along each petal, while evening light lets the shadow tones in the reds deepen. Strong in an entrance hall, a dining room, or a study.
