The Work

Roses in magenta, deep purple, and burnt orange gather across this canvas in loose, swirling impasto, the brushwork closer to movement than definition. A warm glow breaks through the centre background in gold and pale yellow, surrounded by cooler violet and indigo passages that frame the light without containing it. Dark, near-vertical silhouettes rise through the composition like stems or distant foliage, adding structure to what is otherwise entirely gestural. The petals themselves are barely more than colour and motion, magenta folding into purple folding into red, with no single bloom fully resolved into a clean shape. The light at the centre pulls every other colour in the piece toward it.

The Inspiration

This piece let go of the rose as a defined shape and chased the feeling of a rose garden at the exact moment the light turns gold, when detail starts to dissolve into colour and movement. The central glow was built first, then the surrounding magenta and purple were worked in around it, always pulling toward that light rather than existing independently. The dark vertical silhouettes were kept deliberately unresolved, close enough to read as stems without asking to be examined too closely.

What It Carries

The loose, swirling brushwork gives this piece genuine energy, closer to memory or feeling than observation. The warm centre acts almost like a held breath in the middle of that motion, a point of stillness the rest of the canvas moves around. That combination, warmth held inside movement, is what makes the piece feel alive rather than simply colourful. It rewards a longer look precisely because nothing in it is fully resolved.
