The Work

Roses in deep red and near-black stand against a background split cleanly in two, cool teal on the left, burnt orange and amber on the right, with thin trails of dark colour running downward through the composition like something dissolving. The petals are rendered in heavy, textured impasto, their red holding steady across both halves of the divided background rather than shifting with it. Dark, angular stems rise sharply through the lower portion of the canvas, giving the piece a slightly harder edge than the softer floral work elsewhere in the range. The point where teal meets orange sits almost at the centre of the composition, directly behind the densest cluster of blooms.

The Inspiration

This piece was built around a single compositional decision: split the background in half and see what the same flower looks like standing across both sides of the divide. The roses were kept in one consistent, unwavering red specifically so the background could do all the work of shifting temperature around them. The downward trails were added to keep the divide from feeling too clean or graphic, letting the two halves bleed into each other slightly rather than meeting in a hard line.

What It Carries

The unmoving red of the roses against a background split between two opposing temperatures creates a real sense of steadiness under pressure, something holding its own shape regardless of what's happening around it. That quality is what gives the piece its weight. The soft bleed between the teal and orange halves keeps the divide from feeling harsh, so the tension in the piece reads as atmosphere rather than confrontation.

Living With It

The dual-temperature background gives this piece real flexibility, capable of anchoring a room with either warm or cool undertones since it commits fully to both.
