THE WORK

A woman in sharp profile, rendered in flat geometric planes of ivory, charcoal, and hot magenta against a loose, brushy field of chartreuse. Her black bob sits like an architectural statement above angular facial features, eyes closed, red lips set in a line that reads as neither smile nor frown. A solid gold hoop earring pulls the eye to the jaw, deliberate and slightly theatrical. The jacket is fuchsia and structural, its collar slicing upward in hard black lines. Raw sketch marks cut across the composition at irregular intervals, giving the surface an urgency that keeps the image from ever settling into something comfortable. The background is unfinished by design, white canvas bleeding through at the edges, keeping the figure in a state of perpetual forward motion.

THE INSPIRATION

She came from an observation rather than a reference. The kind of woman you see at gallery openings and restaurant lunches, impeccably put together, deeply aware of time passing, and absolutely refusing to acknowledge it out loud. The geometric treatment flattens her into something almost graphic, which is the point: she has spent a lifetime constructing a version of herself, and that construction is visible in every deliberate line. The chartreuse behind her is not a peaceful backdrop. It is slightly aggressive, the colour of something alive and competitive.

WHAT IT CARRIES

There is real tenderness in this piece alongside the wit. The closed eyes are not serenity. They are the particular expression of someone choosing not to see what they are not ready to see. The solid gold hoop is a full stop at the end of a very long sentence about effort and identity. What lingers is not mockery but recognition. Most people who stand in front of this work for more than thirty seconds will know someone exactly like her. Several will realise they are her.

LIVING WITH IT

The palette of chartreuse, hot pink, and charcoal is striking without being aggressive, and it works particularly well against white, grey, or deep charcoal walls. This is a piece for a dressing room, a master bedroom, a boutique hotel suite, or a fashion-forward living space where personality on the wall is considered a design feature rather than a risk. It holds its own at A0 but loses nothing at A1. Natural light sharpens the contrast between the flat colour planes and the raw sketch lines, making the piece read differently morning to evening.
