The Work

Sunflowers in deep red and rust push out from a near-black ground to a teal top, their petals rendered in loose, gestural impasto strokes that leave the dark background visible between blooms. Each flower carries a dense, dark centre, barely distinguishable from the ground it sits against, so the eye reads the surrounding red first and the structure of the flower second. The petals overlap in loose clusters rather than a tight, formal arrangement, giving the piece a sense of movement despite the stillness of the palette. There is very little colour variation beyond red and rust, which keeps the whole composition tightly held together. The dark ground swallows anything that isn't bloom.

The Inspiration

This piece asked what a sunflower becomes when the sun is removed from the equation entirely. Without yellow, without warmth from a visible light source, the flower had to carry its own colour and its own presence. Deep red and rust were chosen because they hold weight even against total black, unlike softer tones that would have disappeared into the ground. The loose, gestural strokes came from wanting the flowers to feel alive rather than fixed, closer to movement than portrait.

What It Carries

The near-black ground gives this piece real gravity, a sense of colour asserting itself against genuine darkness rather than a soft backdrop. That tension between the void and the bloom is what holds attention longer than a brighter piece would. The minimal palette means nothing competes for the eye, so the intensity of the red does all of the emotional work on its own.

Living With It

This piece was built for a dark or dramatic room, deep charcoal, black, or heavy timber, where the near-black ground can extend the wall rather than interrupt it. Against a lighter wall, it reads as a bold, contained statement rather than blending in. Low, warm lighting in the evening lets the red glow rather than flatten, while daylight sharpens the edges of each petal. Strong in a study, a bedroom, or a formal sitting room.
