The Work

This canvas holds nothing but flowers. Black-eyed Susans in vermilion and burnt orange crowd the full surface, their petals built up in thick, directional impasto strokes that catch light along each raised edge. At the centre of every bloom sits a near-black dome, dense and rounded, small enough to read as an eye watching out from the colour around it. The background all but disappears, a deep maroon-black that gives the petals nowhere to fade into. Dark stems thread between the blooms, just visible where the colour breaks. The eye lands on the largest, closest flower first, then moves outward through the cluster, petal edge to petal edge, never finding space to rest in.

The Inspiration

The black-eyed Susan carries its name from that single dark centre, and this piece takes the name literally. Every dome in the composition was painted to hold weight, a small point of stillness inside a field of restless colour. The idea was simple: a flower whose common name already describes a kind of watching deserves a piece built entirely around that act. Vermilion was chosen over a softer orange because the colour needed to hold its own against that much black.

What It Carries

The repetition of those dark centres creates a quiet, steady pressure, the sense of being looked back at rather than simply looking. The vermilion keeps the piece from turning solemn. Together they hold a tension between warmth and watchfulness that doesn't resolve, which is exactly why it holds attention. People who live with this piece mention noticing a different bloom first depending on the day, as if the cluster rearranges its own hierarchy.

Living With It

The near-black ground and dense vermilion read differently by the hour. Morning light sharpens the impasto ridges and lifts the orange tones forward. Evening light lets the background take over, pulling the blooms into deeper shadow until only the eyes remain distinct. It holds its own on a dark wall without disappearing into it, and it settles a plain white wall with real weight. Strong in a dining room, a study, or anywhere a piece is meant to be looked at more than once.

Who It's For

For someone who wants a floral piece with edge rather than softness, and who likes the idea of art that seems to watch the room back.
