The Work

A pastel colour field opens across the canvas in wide, flat blocks, powder pink, warm cream, pale gold and soft sky blue, meeting each other in loose, hand-built seams. Across the surface, fine linear cuts run in every direction, thin and deliberate, catching light differently to the surrounding colour so they read as incisions rather than texture. The blocks sit close in tone, nothing shouting over anything else, which makes the network of cuts feel more exposed rather than less. Near the lower left, a deeper rose and burnt orange break the palette's calm, grounding the piece before the eye drifts back up into pale blue and cream.

The Inspiration

Tender Violence began with a contradiction Jacques wanted to sit inside rather than resolve. A palette this soft should read as comfort, but the surface is marked with cuts that don't apologise for being there. The piece asks what happens when harm and gentleness share the same colour language, and whether softness can still hold its ground once it's been marked.

What It Carries

The tension doesn't resolve, and that's what keeps people looking. From a distance, it reads as calm, pastel, easy. Closer, the cuts assert themselves, and the softness starts to feel deliberate rather than accidental, like something that chose to stay open despite the marks. It carries the quiet discomfort of things that look untouched but aren't.

Living With It

Works well in rooms already built around a pale, warm palette: bedrooms, dressing rooms, boutique reception areas, where the piece can sit as the one element with genuine tension underneath its calm surface. Reads differently in low light versus direct sun, since the fine cuts catch and lose shadow depending on the angle. Suits interiors that want softness with an edge rather than softness alone.
