The Work

Split Second is built around a vertical axis. Deep cobalt and slate occupy the left half, layered in horizontal impasto sweeps with traces of cream and pale grey. The right half erupts in copper, orange, and magenta, the impasto applied in looser, more gestural strokes that press against and partially override the structure of the left. At the seam between the two, colours bleed, cobalt picks up warmth, copper carries traces of blue, and the boundary between them is never quite a line. The composition is wide and horizontal, the split reading differently at different distances.

The Inspiration

Split Second came from the experience of a decision point: the moment when two very different futures become visible simultaneously and neither has yet been chosen. The cool and the warm, the deliberate and the instinctive, the structured and the released. The seam between them is the painting's subject. Not either side.

What It Carries

This piece carries the tension of simultaneity. It is not about conflict. It is about coexistence just before one thing becomes inevitable. People who live with it tend to describe it differently at different times in their lives, which is an accurate reflection of what it is doing.

Living With It

The cobalt and copper palette is one of the most interior-design-friendly in the collection. It pairs with warm neutrals and cool ones, with dark furnishings and pale walls, with industrial materials and natural ones. Wide horizontal format works as a major feature wall piece.
