The Work

This is a portrait-oriented piece with an unusual composition: a large cross-shaped form rendered in warm yellow, raw ochre, and rust dominates the centre, the arms extending to all four edges and leaving just enough room at the corners for deep cobalt and magenta to breathe. The impasto runs throughout, each section built in thick horizontal sweeps that give the whole piece a woven, architectural quality. White breaks through at the intersection of the arms, creating an unexpected stillness at the exact centre of the heat.

The Inspiration

The Ochre Cross came from a meditation on frameworks: the structures we inherit, the shapes that organize our lives before we are old enough to question them. The cross here is not religious in intent. It is structural, a grid, a plan, a set of inherited coordinates. The yellow and ochre palette suggests both warmth and caution, and the cobalt at the edges is the world that exists outside the frame.

What It Carries

There is something unsettling about the clarity of the form here. Most abstract work avoids this kind of legibility. The cross is unmistakable, and yet it is made entirely of colour and texture, no line, no outline. It sits between recognition and abstraction in a way that keeps the viewer engaged over time.

Living With It

The yellow, ochre, and cobalt palette gives this piece enormous flexibility. It works in warm interiors and cool ones. Dark rooms with deep furniture welcome the warmth.
