The Work

A Whippet face fills the canvas in close, considered proximity. The colouring is the most restrained in the Modigliani's Muse dog collection: cream and chalk white across the long narrow muzzle, black markings sitting with quiet precision above the eyes and across the ears. Warm amber-brown touches at the nose and cheek are the only warmth in an otherwise cool, composed palette. The background is pale and undemanding, rendered in soft grey-blue impasto strokes that step back rather than compete. The brushwork follows the delicate architecture of the subject: lighter in application than the other dog portraits, the technique echoing the animal's own physical quality of something built for speed that has chosen, in this moment, to be entirely still.

The Inspiration
