Cardinal in Shadow takes the red and cream leaves from Cardinal Leaf and sets them against dark green fern fronds, visible in silhouette behind the main leaf forms rather than sitting beside them as their own shapes. The red leaves dominate the foreground, their veining rendered in deep, textured ridges that catch the light unevenly across the surface. Between them, pale cream leaves carry fine red veining that fans out from the centre like a network of thin rivers, offering a lighter note against the density of red. The dark fronds sit further back in the composition, half hidden, giving the whole pattern a sense of two distinct depths rather than one flat field. At upholstery scale the effect is layered rather than busy, the red and cream leaves reading first and the shadowed fronds only revealing themselves once you look for them.
The same subject looks different depending on the light around it. Cardinal in Shadow takes the leaf forms from Cardinal Leaf and places them in a darker setting, letting the same red and cream carry a more moody, layered read. The fern fronds came from wanting a second depth in the pattern, something that sits behind the main leaves rather than beside them, the way undergrowth is felt more than seen once a canopy closes overhead.
A room dressed in Cardinal in Shadow feels rich and a little more serious than its companion piece. It suits a study, a formal dining room, or a hospitality space that wants warmth without brightness, pairing naturally with dark wood, aged brass, and low, considered lighting. The dark fronds reward a closer look, revealing themselves gradually rather than announcing their presence from across the room. Live with it and the pattern keeps offering a second layer long after the red and cream have become familiar.
This design is available in three layout scales:
Grand: A larger-scale composition that reads with authority across statement furniture and feature walls.
Classic: A balanced, repeated layout with natural structure and rhythm. Works across most applications.
Detailed: A fine-scale repeat where the impasto texture becomes the surface itself. Ideal for scatter cushions, smaller upholstery panels, and layered soft furnishings.
Style tip: Use a measuring tape to mark out 50cm on your planned project surface. That window shows you exactly how the Detailed scale brings texture and rhythm into a smaller space.
