Midnight Specimen has a companion piece, Midnight Undertow from The Underpainting collection, worked in the exact same magenta, teal, and burnt orange palette.
About This Design
Magenta daisies with burnt orange centres press against a deep teal ground so dark it reads almost black in places, the kind of contrast that makes every petal look lit from within. The blooms overlap tightly, their edges softened by impasto shading that gives each petal real thickness under the light. There is no daylight softness here. The colour sits hot and saturated against the near black ground, a deliberate collision that keeps the print from ever reading as sweet or quiet. Up close, the layered strokes catch shadow and highlight in equal measure. From across a room, the magenta carries first, the dark ground holding it in place like a specimen pinned to black paper.
The Inspiration
This design came from flowers sketched by lamplight after the sun had gone down, when colour reads differently against artificial light and a dark page. Magenta and orange, ordinary enough in daylight, turn almost electric once the rest of the garden has faded to shadow. The botanist kept working past the point most people would have closed the ledger for the night, more interested in how the blooms behaved once nothing else competed for attention.
What It Carries
This fabric holds its nerve. It is not a soft floral and does not try to be, using the near black ground to let magenta and orange do exactly what they do best without apology. It suits a chair, headboard, or cushion in a room that already leans moody or dramatic, adding warmth without diluting that atmosphere. The longer it sits in a space, the more it reads as a considered, confident choice rather than a loud one.
Design Size Options
This design is available in three layout scales:
Grand: A larger scale composition that reads with authority across statement furniture and feature walls.
Classic: A balanced, repeated layout with natural structure and rhythm. Works across most applications.
Detailed: A fine scale repeat where the impasto texture becomes the surface itself. Ideal for scatter cushions, smaller upholstery panels, and layered soft furnishings.
Style tip: Mark out a small section on your planned project surface to see how the Detailed scale reads in your space. That preview will show you exactly how the texture and rhythm land before you commit to a size.
