About This Design:
Midnight Undertow moves in deep magenta and burnt orange, cut through by cool teal wherever the surface breaks open. There's no floral, no figure, nothing to name, only thick impasto strokes pulled across each other until the eye starts finding rhythm instead of shape. The heat of the pink and orange fights the teal for space, and that tension is the whole point. Up close, the design reads as raw texture, each stroke visible, almost dimensional against the fabric. From across a room, the same design settles into a single moving field of colour, warm and cool trading places depending on the light. Within The Underpainting, this is the one that started it, built first as a study meant to sit alongside a floral design and hold its own instead.

The Inspiration:
This design started as a colour test, worked out late one night while developing a floral pattern for the collection now known as Midnight Specimen. The floral needed a colour world to sit inside, so this exploration came first: pure pigment, no shape, just enough motion to prove the palette could hold energy and quiet in the same square. It became something on its own before the flowers ever went in. That first exploration is Midnight Undertow, still carrying the same current of colour the flowers eventually settled into.

What It Carries:
What stays with you is the tension, not the colour itself but the way the heat and cool stay unresolved rather than settling into one temperature. It reads differently depending on the time of day, catching warm in morning light and settling cooler by evening. On a chair or a cushion, it works less like a pattern and more like an undertone running beneath everything else in the room, present even when you're not looking directly at it. That's the quiet function of a design built to sit underneath something else: it doesn't have to shout to hold its place.
