Vertical bands of powder blue, blush pink and warm gold run the height of the canvas, each one meeting the next in a soft, uneven seam rather than a hard line. At the centre, a cream passage builds up in thick, circular strokes, the paint clearly worked and reworked in slow turns rather than laid flat, catching light differently depending on where you stand. Beside it, a pocket of near black interrupts the palette entirely, offering no explanation for itself. Certain edges throughout the piece stay crisp while others blur into a gentle haze, as though parts of the surface were caught mid-thought and never quite resolved.
Nocturne in Blush began with the idea of a confession made at night, in blush and powder tones rather than the deep shadow that word usually implies. Jacques wanted the softness to carry weight rather than lightness, a palette gentle enough to feel private, with the black voids and hazy passages standing in for the parts of the story that stay unspoken even in the telling.
There's a stillness to this piece that rewards slow looking. The circular brushwork at its centre draws the eye in before the eye notices the black gaps sitting quietly beside it, and by then the piece has already asked its question: what is being held back, and why does it feel so gentle. It carries the particular intimacy of a secret told in a soft voice rather than a raised one.
Suited to bedrooms, dressing rooms and reading nooks, anywhere a room wants a quieter emotional register rather than a bold statement. The vertical format works well in narrower wall spaces, hallways, or beside a doorway, where its height can be appreciated at close range. Pairs naturally with brushed brass, soft linen and pale timber.
For collectors drawn to restraint over spectacle, and for interior designers finishing an intimate, softly lit space with a piece that asks to be looked at slowly rather than glanced at once.
